OpenAI is aggressively expanding its advertising model within ChatGPT, adding Brazil and Mexico to the list of supported regions. This expansion follows earlier rollouts in the US, UK, Canada, and Japan, specifically targeting users on the platform's free tiers (Free and Go).
Innovative Formats and 'Sponsored Agents'
The company is introducing new, interactive ad formats to capitalize on its massive traffic. Currently, users are seeing carousel ads that display products from a single advertiser per section. However, the most significant shift lies in the upcoming 'sponsored agents.'
These agents will offer conversational AI experiences, allowing users to interact directly with a brand's AI representative. This native AI approach aims to provide a more integrated experience than traditional search engine ads, potentially redefining how brands engage with consumers in a chat-based environment.
Measurement Tools and Market Position
To attract major advertisers, OpenAI is enhancing its campaign performance and conversion tracking tools. New partnerships with adtech specialists such as Hightouch and Triple Whale provide businesses with detailed data to optimize their ad spend and monitor direct sales or sign-ups.
Despite this rapid evolution, OpenAI's advertising revenue is still in its infancy compared to industry leaders. As of May, the company's advertising annual recurring revenue (ARR) stood at $100 million—a fraction of Google’s $294 billion and Meta’s $196 billion. Nevertheless, with over 1 billion active users, OpenAI is positioned to claim a larger share of the digital advertising market through its unique interactive capabilities.
