OpenAI is scaling its advertising presence by introducing ads to ChatGPT in India, one of its most significant and rapidly expanding global markets. This transition represents a strategic pivot for the company as it explores revenue opportunities beyond its subscription services.

Reaching a 100-Million-Strong Audience

The advertising rollout targets users on the Free and Go tiers within India. The country is a vital hub for OpenAI, boasting a weekly user base exceeding 100 million. The initiative launches with 50 brands, utilizing partnerships with major advertising networks like WPP and Omnicom.

How the Ad Model Functions

OpenAI stated that advertisements will be positioned beneath ChatGPT's responses, appearing in contexts relevant to the user's query or intent. Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI, noted that this approach allows brands to engage in "high-context moments" while users are researching or evaluating options.

Commitment to Neutrality and Privacy

A primary focus of the announcement is maintaining the integrity of AI-generated content. OpenAI emphasizes several key points:

  • Advertisements will not dictate or alter the substance of the AI's answers.
  • The core response system is kept strictly separate from advertising operations.
  • Brands will not be granted access to user chat histories, stored memories, or personal identifiers.

Instead of individual data, businesses will be provided with anonymized performance metrics, such as impressions and click-through rates. Beyond India, OpenAI is also deepening its roots in Brazil, which remains one of the platform's top three markets globally.
