Apple is making a calculated push into the smart home market through a strategic collaboration with LG. According to a Bloomberg report, the two companies are working under a 'second-party' development arrangement to produce a new lineup of hardware. While these products will reportedly carry LG branding, they are designed for deep integration with Apple’s evolving smart home ecosystem.
Hardware Expansion and Technical Specs
The upcoming product line covers essential categories for modern home automation, including:
- Video doorbells and smart thermostats.
- Indoor and outdoor security cameras.
- Floodlight cameras for perimeter security.
- Smart deadbolt locks.
A standout feature of the reported door lock is the inclusion of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. This feature would theoretically allow for hands-free entry, automatically unlocking the door as a recognized user approaches. To ensure broad compatibility and reliability, several of these devices are expected to support the Matter and Thread smart home protocols, coinciding with what is being described as a 'formal reboot' of Apple's HomeKit platform.
A Centralized Vision
The LG-manufactured gear is intended to integrate with Apple's rumored smart home hub. This device is said to feature a six-inch display, Siri AI capabilities, and versatile mounting options for walls or tabletops. Apple is expected to unveil these developments during an event on October 13th. The presentation may also include updates to other home hardware, such as a new HomePod mini and an upgraded Apple TV device.
