Amazon has announced it will permanently shutter AWS Mechanical Turk (MTurk) on September 30, 2026, marking the end of a 21-year run. The service, famously dubbed "artificial artificial intelligence" by Jeff Bezos, served as a cornerstone of the early digital economy by outsourcing tasks to humans that computers were once unable to perform.
The Legacy of the 'Mechanical Turk'
The platform's name was inspired by the famous 18th-century chess-playing machine that appeared to be an automated robot but actually concealed a human player inside. Following this logic, MTurk allowed businesses to assign "Human Intelligence Tasks" (HITs)—such as data categorization and transcription—to hundreds of thousands of workers worldwide, often for just a few cents per task.
The AI Paradox and Market Competition
The decline of the service was accelerated by the very technology it helped train. A 2023 study revealed an ironic paradox: up to 46% of the platform's workers were using generative AI models to complete their tasks, undermining the core premise of specialized human intervention.
Furthermore, rising competition from specialized platforms like Scale AI, Mercor, and Prolific significantly eroded MTurk's market share. Amazon had already ceased accepting new customers last month, signaling its retreat from a labor model that predated the modern gig economy but struggled to adapt to the era of advanced automation.
