Alibaba shares climbed approximately 3% in Hong Kong following the unveiling of a new artificial intelligence chip and an ambitious global infrastructure plan. The Chinese tech giant is positioning itself aggressively in the global compute race, targeting a data center capacity of over 20 GW by 2032.

The Zhenwu V900 Chip

At the annual Apsara conference in Hangzhou, Alibaba Cloud introduced the Zhenwu V900. The company claims this new AI chip delivers triple the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu M890, which was released in May.

Key details regarding the chip's rollout include:

  • Mass production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
  • Commercial availability is set for the same period.
  • The existing Zhenwu lineup is already utilized by over 650 clients across sectors such as automotive, finance, energy, and manufacturing.

Infrastructure Expansion and Global Competition

Alibaba's roadmap to exceed 20 GW in data center capacity by 2032 highlights the escalating investment in AI infrastructure worldwide. For comparison, Nvidia is collaborating on 2 GW of AI infrastructure in Australia by 2027, and Meta is planning a 1 GW data center in Canada at an estimated cost of $9 billion.

Qwen Models and the "Machine Thinking" Vision

The company also confirmed that its next-generation AI model, Qwen 4, is currently in the training phase, with Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 already in the pipeline. Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu emphasized that the potential for "machine thinking" remains vast, comparing the current state of AI to the early days of electrification.

"AI coding is just the lightbulb of the machine intelligence era,"
Wu remarked, suggesting that the most significant developments are yet to come.
