Google is expanding the capabilities of Gemini AI in the automotive sector by introducing "Personal Intelligence." This update allows Gemini, operating within Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in, to access information across various Google applications, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search.

Context-Aware Assistance

The integration aims to provide drivers with more relevant, hands-free support. For instance, Google notes that a driver heading to the airport can ask Gemini for their flight status; the AI will retrieve confirmation details from Gmail and provide real-time updates. Users can also issue commands like "take me to my doctor’s appointment," allowing the assistant to pull location data directly from the Calendar, or ask it to navigate to a destination identified in a recently taken photo.

Privacy Controls and Vehicle Support

The feature is rolling out to a range of manufacturers that have adopted Google built-in systems, including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar. To address privacy, Google emphasizes that the AI will only access personal apps if the user manually enables the "Personal Intelligence" setting. Furthermore, personalized responses are only available when the user's phone is physically connected to the car.

For those who prefer not to use these features, standard functions such as navigation, media playback, and calling remain operational. However, the assistant's responses in those cases will remain generic rather than tailored to the individual's data.

Availability

Personal Intelligence is beginning its rollout for Android Auto today. Support for vehicles with Google built-in is scheduled to follow in the coming months.
