Anthropic has announced a significant expansion of Claude's voice mode, making it available on its more powerful Opus and Sonnet models. Previously, voice interaction was restricted to Haiku, the company's faster but less sophisticated model. Alongside this update, Anthropic is extending Claude’s reach into essential productivity applications, including Gmail, Slack, and Canva.
Transitioning to Complex Problem-Solving
When Anthropic first launched voice mode, the focus was on delivering rapid answers to casual queries. However, the company noted that users quickly began applying the tool to "real business problems" that required more cognitive depth than Haiku was designed to provide. While Haiku excelled at speed, it often failed to deliver the thorough analysis needed for professional tasks.
The integration of Sonnet and Opus aims to bridge this gap. These models are built for "hard problem-solving" and can perform complex analysis or take direct actions. For instance, a spoken conversation can be transformed into a formal one-page pitch, or the AI can adjust calendar appointments in response to real-world delays.
Seamless Switching and Global Reach
The updated interface allows users to toggle between text and voice modes mid-conversation. It also supports switching between models; a user might start a brainstorm with the agile Haiku and transition to Opus for deep-dive exploration without losing context.
Furthermore, Anthropic is moving its multilingual voice support out of beta. The service now officially supports French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese, marking a significant step in its international expansion.
