U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday via Truth Social the creation of an 'AI Force' to oversee the regulatory framework of artificial intelligence. Additionally, he stated that he intends to appoint an 'AI Tsar' in the near future to lead these efforts.
Support Over Restriction
In his post, Trump emphasized that his administration would not hinder the sector's progress. 'We will not block or slow down the development of this incredible industry in any way,' he wrote. Instead, he pledged to support and assist the industry's growth while maintaining oversight. He noted that 'bad practices' would be identified and addressed through the existing criminal and civil justice systems.
Rejection of New Federal Rules
Trump dismissed calls for new federal regulations regarding AI, arguing that the United States simply needs a 'strong president' to regulate the technology effectively. Earlier in the week, he had referred to a 'sick conspiracy' targeting artificial intelligence and data centers.
Geopolitical Stakes and China
The announcement comes as U.S. officials prepare to raise AI-related issues in upcoming talks with China. President Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week. Both nations view AI advancements as vital for economic and military competitiveness, though they remain at odds over access to advanced chips, allegations of technology theft, and industry regulation.
