The Greek Ministry of Health is presenting a new Artificial Intelligence system today designed to monitor private medical clinics. The initiative follows the death of Giorgos Mazonakis and recent revelations regarding an unlicensed clinic operating in the Kolonaki district of Athens.
Citizen-Led Verification
According to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, the new digital tool will enable citizens to verify a clinic's operating license before their visit. The system automatically links all relevant registries, clearly displaying which medical procedures are authorized at a specific location and which are not.
"We believe that the use of information by the patients themselves is a much more effective means of control than any mechanism," the Minister stated, noting that manually inspecting 45,000 clinics is technically unfeasible.
24/7 AI Monitoring Agents
The role of AI in this tool focuses on the deployment of "AI agents" that will scan the internet 24 hours a day. Their primary mission is to identify advertisements for medical services that cannot be legally documented or verified. These agents will report findings directly to the Ministry of Health for further legal action and complaints.
The press conference for the system's launch includes participation from Matina Pagoni, president of the Panhellenic Medical Association's interim committee, and Giorgos Patoulis, president of the Athens Medical Association.
