On Tuesday, July 21, authorities introduced Traffic Commander, a digital platform designed to modernize how traffic is managed across the Attica region. By integrating artificial intelligence into its camera network, the system provides the Traffic Police with a real-time overview of major roads, allowing them to identify disruptions as they occur.
Automated Incident Detection
The primary advantage of this technology is its ability to flag anomalies automatically, reducing the burden on staff to monitor every screen manually. Traffic Commander is programmed to detect:
- Stalled or broken-down vehicles
- Road hazards and debris
- Sudden slowdowns in traffic flow
- Areas of high congestion
Rapid identification is critical, as a single stationary vehicle on a main artery can trigger a chain reaction of delays throughout the network.
Enhanced Coordination
The system is managed from a new Traffic Control Operations Center, described as the most advanced facility of its kind in Greece. A key objective is to establish a shared operational picture to improve synergy between the Attica Region, the Traffic Police, and EKAV (Emergency Medical Services).
By streamlining the flow of information, authorities aim to reduce response times for dispatching ambulances or roadside assistance, ensuring that obstructions are cleared quickly and driver safety is maintained. While Traffic Commander is not expected to solve Attica's congestion issues single-handedly, it serves as a vital tool for the more efficient management of the daily incidents that worsen gridlock.
