The European Union has approved the first five European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCI), marking a significant step forward in military cooperation among member states. Funded with €325 million from the European Defense Industry Programme (EDIP), these initiatives aim to bolster the Union's industrial base and military readiness.

Greek Involvement and Strategic Sectors

Greece has secured a position in four of the five approved projects, reflecting its strategic focus on modernizing its defense capabilities within a European framework. The country will participate in the following programs:

  • DECODER: Development of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and counter-drone systems, involving 26 member states.
  • IMSD: Integrated maritime and seabed defense, focusing on the protection of critical underwater infrastructure and maritime awareness.
  • SPACE: Strengthening European space capabilities to support defense requirements.
  • EU-FIAMD: A federated integrated air and missile defense system, including early warning capabilities.

The only project Greece is not participating in is the "Eastern Flank Watch," which focuses on the security of the EU's eastern borders.

Industrial Cooperation and Long-term Goals

These projects are part of the broader EDIP framework, which has a total budget of €1.5 billion. The initiative encourages large-scale industrial cooperation, allowing member states to jointly develop and procure defense assets that would be difficult to realize individually. This framework emphasizes interoperability, production capacity enhancement, and joint procurement strategies.

The European Commission will collaborate with participating states to organize and monitor the progress of these long-term initiatives, which are designed to evolve beyond the current funding cycle.
