Washington and Beijing are establishing a bilateral communication channel aimed at addressing incidents caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. The announcement was made by the White House following the conclusion of Chinese President Xi Jinping's official visit to the United States on Friday.
Dialogue on 'Super-intelligence'
The two global powers are launching the 'US-China Dialogue on Super-intelligence,' a platform for exchanging views on the risks and benefits of advanced AI. The term 'super-intelligence' was recently employed by US President Donald Trump, highlighting the significance both leaders place on the technology's evolution.
Despite the agreement to communicate, the leaders' approaches show distinct differences:
- Xi Jinping emphasized the responsibility of both nations to ensure that AI remains under human control for the common good.
- Donald Trump expressed his desire to remain at the 'current stage' of regulation, opposing the imposition of new restrictions.
Transparency and National Security
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted the need to move from a state of opacity to a more transparent relationship between the two powers. The proposed notification mechanism would be activated in the event of incidents affecting national security, preventing the possibility of technology escaping the control of its creators.
