TikTok, the platform that reshaped content consumption, appears to be preparing its next major move: transforming direct messages (DMs) into a comprehensive digital wallet. According to code discovered in the app's iPhone version in the US, ByteDance is developing a feature that would allow users to send money to one another without ever leaving the application.
How the Payments Will Function
The new feature, currently in early development, will enable direct money transfers via DMs. Recipients will be able to accept payments within a specific timeframe, while senders will receive notifications regarding the transaction status. Following the Venmo model, TikTok plans to include short notes or comments to accompany each transfer.
While the company clarified that the feature is not yet being publicly tested, the strategy is clear: ByteDance aims to keep users within its ecosystem. Currently, many creators direct their followers to external services like PayPal or Cash App. By integrating payments, TikTok not only increases time spent on the app but also gains access to valuable transaction data.
The Road to a ‘Super App’
This strategy is not new for ByteDance, which already operates Douyin Pay in China. Expanding TikTok Pay—already used for TikTok Shop purchases in Southeast Asian markets—into peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions would turn the platform into a formidable fintech player.
- Global consumer spending on TikTok has exceeded $2.9 billion since the start of 2026.
- The company is bolstering its teams with executives from banking giants like JPMorgan Chase.
- Financial service license applications have already been filed in Brazil.
Challenges and Security
Despite the potential, entering financial services brings TikTok face-to-face with strict regulatory scrutiny. Managing payments requires robust safeguards against fraud and money laundering. Furthermore, the platform is already under legal pressure in the US regarding the protection of minor users, making the integration of financial transactions into private messages a highly sensitive endeavor.
