An OpenAI engineer has been arrested following the discovery of a “sophisticated recording device” hidden within the company’s offices. The employee, identified as 35-year-old Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan, is charged with using or endeavoring to use a device to intercept oral communications, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Discovery and the Role of AI

The recording device was found plugged into a TV’s USB port in an executive conference room—a space used for discussions regarding “highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information.” In a notable detail, OpenAI stated it utilized its own AI models to “understand the device and where it had come from,” which helped identify Alfozan as the individual who planted it.

Evidence and Legal Action

Although Alfozan did not have authorized access to the executive room, CCTV footage allegedly placed him near the location on multiple dates prior to the discovery. Federal prosecutors claim the footage shows Alfozan appearing to look behind the TV where the device was installed.

  • The device was reportedly covered in toilet paper and its contents were encrypted.
  • OpenAI security also discovered a bag left by Alfozan containing his wallet, ID, and an additional recording device.
  • The employee was terminated and the incident was referred to the FBI.

OpenAI has emphasized that there are currently no indications that Alfozan inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. The company stated it views the protection of its technology as a matter of national importance.
