Consulting giant McKinsey & Company is introducing a new digital hurdle for some entry-level job seekers. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, candidates will be asked to engage in a 10-minute conversation with an AI-simulated client as part of the interview process.

Reflecting Real-World Scenarios

The AI simulation is designed to mirror approximately 80% of the situations McKinsey consultants encounter in their day-to-day professional lives. Notably, the simulation is intended to be realistic rather than extreme; it is not programmed to mimic an "unhinged" or irrational client, but rather to test standard professional competence.

The Human Element in Assessment

While the interaction involves AI, the evaluation process remains grounded in human judgment. The AI tool itself will not score the candidates. Instead, human assessors will be present in the room to observe the interaction and evaluate how effectively the candidates navigate the simulated client environment.

The tool is currently in a testing phase, set to be deployed this fall for undergraduate applicants seeking business-analyst roles in select North American offices. Reports suggest that "hundreds" of candidates may participate in this pilot program as McKinsey explores the integration of AI avatars into its recruitment pipeline.
