New research commissioned by Meta and conducted by YouGov highlights the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for small businesses in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The study, which surveyed nearly 4,000 small business owners across nine markets, reveals that AI adoption is already widespread, with 84% of respondents currently utilizing the technology.
Productivity and Competitive Edge
According to the findings, 76% of owners report a positive impact on productivity, while 71% have seen a boost in revenue or sales over the past 12 months. A key takeaway is AI’s role as a leveler: 80% of respondents agree that AI helps small businesses compete more effectively with larger corporations, enabling tasks that previously required significantly more capital and resources.
The most common applications of AI include:
- Content creation and editing (51%)
- Local advertising and marketing (43%)
- Translation services (38%)
- Customer support and communications (37%)
The Guidance Gap
Despite the high adoption rates, a significant knowledge gap persists. 86% of surveyed owners stated they need more guidance to fully realize AI's benefits. Cost remains the primary barrier to training, cited by 51% of participants. Business owners are specifically calling for clearer information regarding return on investment (ROI) and data privacy protocols.
Real-World Impact: The Zayya Case
Meta is addressing these needs through initiatives like the Small Business Growth Academy. A notable success story is Husnul Khotimah, founder of the Indonesian fashion brand Zayya. By leveraging AI-enabled tools such as Advantage+, she expanded her business into Malaysia on a minimal budget. This integration reduced customer response times from up to 60 minutes to under two minutes, resulting in an eightfold return on ad spend.
