Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone arena with the official announcement of the iPhone Duo. Unveiled during the "Surprise and Shine" event led by new CEO John Ternus, the device represents Apple's long-awaited response to competitors like Samsung and Google, arriving years after the first foldables hit the market.
Design and Display Innovation
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and unfolds to reveal a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner screen. Apple has opted for a "nano-texture" matte finish on the internal display, which significantly reduces glare. Early hands-on reports indicate a smooth folding mechanism with an IP68 rating and a crease that is nearly impossible to detect visually or by touch.
Hardware and iOS 27
Powered by the A20 Pro chipset, the Duo shares its processing core with the iPhone 18 Pro. Key hardware specifications include:
- A dual-camera system featuring a 48-megapixel fusion lens and a wide-angle lens.
- Touch ID integrated into the power button, replacing the traditional Face ID.
- Ceramic Shield 2 protection and an eSIM-only configuration worldwide.
- Forthcoming Apple Pencil support later this year.
To accommodate the larger canvas, Apple completely revamped iOS 27. The updated software includes a side-mounted dock and multitasking capabilities designed to feel as intuitive as an iPad, complete with a flashy new animation upon unfolding.
Pricing and Market Reception
The premium experience comes with a premium price tag, starting at $1,999 for the 256GB base model. Despite the cost, Apple reports that preorder demand has been "extraordinary." Delivery estimates for online orders have already slipped into late January 2027, though units may be available in-person at Apple Stores starting October 23rd.
Repair Costs
Maintenance for the foldable is notably expensive without AppleCare Plus. Apple's estimated repair costs include $229 for battery service, $999 for inner display damage, and up to $1,499 for other types of damage, reflecting the complex nature of the device's hardware.
