Chinese AI specialist DeepSeek is preparing for one of the largest funding rounds in the sector's history, as investor interest has significantly outpaced the company's initial targets. According to Bloomberg, the firm is close to securing at least 80 billion yuan (approximately $12 billion), with transaction documents suggesting the final figure could reach 100 billion yuan.

Major Backers and Surging Demand

The funding round is expected to include heavyweights of the Chinese tech and industrial landscape. Tencent, the operator of WeChat, and CATL, the world's leading battery manufacturer, have reportedly committed to some of the largest contributions. DeepSeek's original goal was to raise 50 billion yuan, but demand spiked following the release of its latest AI model, which bolstered expectations for its commercial prospects.

Cost-Efficiency and the 2027 IPO Path

This capital injection is viewed as a critical step preceding a potential Initial Public Offering (IPO) slated for early 2027. DeepSeek first captured international attention in 2025 by demonstrating high-performance models at a fraction of the cost of its rivals. Through its V4 series, the company continues to market its performance-to-cost ratio as its primary competitive edge against both domestic and US competitors.

For founder Liang Wenfeng, the robust investor demand serves as a validation of DeepSeek's standing in the global AI market. The additional resources will be vital for developing models in an environment defined by escalating computational costs and fierce competition.
