A group of powerful Silicon Valley figures is launching an extensive multi-million dollar advertising campaign aimed at persuading American citizens of the benefits of AI data centers. The organization "Build American AI," backed by names such as Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman, seeks to influence public opinion in key U.S. swing states.
The Battle for Public Opinion
This move comes in response to growing public skepticism. According to a study by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, 61% of Americans now oppose the construction of new data centers near their communities. This figure shows a rapid increase, rising by 12 percentage points since last March.
The advertisements will focus on critical states, including Ohio, Wisconsin, and Kansas. The campaign is reportedly receiving support from the "Leading the Future" super PAC, which commands funds of $100 million.
Arguments and Backlash
Build American AI presents the development of these infrastructures as an "existential" issue for American leadership. They argue that opposition to data centers deprives citizens of well-paying jobs and weakens local communities. Furthermore, the organization characterized the backlash as part of a "radical manipulation operation."
However, the industry faces a difficult reality. Despite PwC's forecasts for mammoth investments of $32 trillion in AI data centers by 2050, concerns regarding resource consumption and local impact remain strong, making public acceptance one of the greatest hurdles for AI expansion.
