Donald Trump has appointed Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), as the administration's "AI Tsar." According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Clayton will spearhead a new White House task force dubbed the "Super Intelligence Force."

The 120-Day Mandate

The task force has been given a 120-day window to deliver a report outlining the risks and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. Speaking to the WSJ, Clayton emphasized that the President's goal is to ensure the United States remains the global leader in advanced AI, noting that "the risk of not being first is great."

The group's mission involves drafting proposals to counter societal threats linked to AI while strictly avoiding "excessive regulation." A key focus is preventing "regulatory capture," where dominant market players influence rules to maintain their competitive advantage and stifle innovation.

Industry Self-Regulation and Geopolitics

Officials indicated that the task force intends to leave the majority of AI risk management to the industry itself, working in collaboration with tech firms. Trump's stance appears firmly anti-regulatory, driven by the belief that heavy oversight could compromise American competitiveness against China.

This policy direction emerges amidst warnings from some researchers regarding existential risks, with some suggesting AI could pose a threat to human life within a decade. These concerns have sparked bipartisan calls for action in Congress. The task force will include high-ranking officials such as Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
