In the streets of Hangzhou, eastern China, humanoid robots are transitioning from laboratory prototypes to active roles in urban management. Developed by DEEP Robotics, these systems are undergoing real-world trials to evaluate their effectiveness as "robotic traffic controllers."
Roles and Operational Capabilities
During these trials, the humanoid units have been tasked with several responsibilities to maintain order at busy intersections:
- Managing the flow of traffic.
- Directing both motorists and pedestrians.
- Assisting tourists with essential information.
A vital component of their practical utility is their resilience to environmental factors. Gao Xinwei, a technical support engineer at DEEP Robotics, notes that these robots are engineered to function in temperatures between -20 and +55 degrees Celsius, a range necessary for sustained outdoor use.
Hangzhou: A Robotics Hub
Hangzhou is establishing itself as a major center for the Chinese robotics sector and embodied AI, hosting hundreds of specialized companies, including DEEP Robotics and Unitree. The city has already integrated robotic technology into its infrastructure; since May, a team of 15 smart traffic robots has been deployed in high-traffic tourist zones.
The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce the physical and mental load on human officers. Conducted during China's National Day celebrations, these trials are expected to inform future iterations of the technology. By assigning repetitive duties to robots, police personnel can prioritize more critical tasks, such as managing accidents and responding to emergencies.
The industry's focus is now moving beyond basic mechanical capabilities toward ensuring these humanoids can operate with high reliability and safety in complex public spaces alongside people and vehicles.
This expansion from industrial settings to public thoroughfares reflects China's significant investment in humanoid robotics for logistics and public services, effectively moving advanced technology into the functional life of the city.
