A used and signed leather jacket belonging to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was sold on Friday at a Sotheby’s auction for a staggering $960,000. The final price was reached after 65 bids, spectacularly exceeding the auction house's initial estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.
A Symbol of the AI Era
For nearly two decades, the leather jacket has served as Huang's "uniform," accompanying him during major product launches and corporate events. As Nvidia emerged as a dominant force in the global AI boom, the garment acquired symbolic value for collectors, who now view it as a historical memento of a significant technological era.
Notably, the sale price was nearly 100 times higher than the retail price of a comparable Tom Ford jacket, which typically sells for just under $10,000.
Philanthropy and the Edge Institute
According to Sotheby’s, the proceeds from the auction will be donated to a charitable initiative supporting the Edge Institute. This non-profit organization focuses on innovation, and the funds will be used to finance scholarships, grants, and residency programs.
The Story Behind the Jacket
Huang has often joked about his public persona, referring to himself in a 2016 Reddit discussion as "the guy in the leather jacket." In a 2023 podcast, he shared that his wife and daughter are responsible for selecting his wardrobe.
The auction also recalled a 2024 moment when Huang exchanged jackets with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. At the time, Zuckerberg remarked that the item was "worth more because it’s used"—a comment that proved prophetic following the $960,000 sale.
