The race for AI dominance has evolved into an unprecedented spending sprint, with Meta now operating on a scale comparable only to global superpowers. The company plans to allocate up to $145 billion in capital expenditures (CapEx) for 2026, representing a 101% increase from the $72.2 billion spent just a year prior.
Spending at National Defense Levels
The magnitude of Meta's investment is staggering when compared to global military expenditures. According to 2025 SIPRI data, Meta's 2026 budget will exceed the military spending of every nation on Earth, except for the United States ($954 billion), China ($336 billion), and Russia ($190 billion). Nations with significant military footprints, such as Germany ($113 billion) and India ($92 billion), now trail behind the social media giant's technological budget.
The Quest for "Super-Intelligence"
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has labeled 2026 a landmark year for the company’s pursuit of what he calls "super-intelligence." These funds are primarily directed toward:
- Computing infrastructure and massive data centers.
- Training advanced AI models.
- Developing personal digital assistants and new consumer products.
- Creating enterprise services, including APIs and the potential direct sale of computing power.
"We are now at a point where our AI investments are accelerating every core part of our business," Zuckerberg stated, noting that AI is already enhancing user experience and advertiser performance.
A Broader Industry Surge
Meta is not alone in this fiscal escalation. Collectively, the industry's "Big Four" — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft — are projected to spend approximately $730 billion on AI in 2026, a sharp increase from previous estimates of $600 billion. For Meta specifically, total expenses for 2026, including high-level recruitment and infrastructure, are expected to reach $169 billion.
