Southeast Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing region for Gemini, with adoption rates outstripping every other Google application. According to the inaugural Gemini Southeast Asia Report, the number of active users has more than doubled within a single year. This surge is fueled by a tech-savvy demographic—nearly 40% of the population is under 25—and the model's specialized performance in local languages.
The Power of Local Fluency
Gemini’s regional success is rooted in its ability to bypass English in favor of native tongues. Nearly 70% of prompts in the region are submitted in local languages, with Vietnam leading at 89%, followed by Thailand at 87% and Indonesia at 84%. The Southeast Asia Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (SEA-HELM) currently rates Gemini as the top-performing large language model for the region's specific linguistic needs.
A Mobile-First Creative Hub
Usage patterns in Southeast Asia are distinctly mobile-centric, with 75% of requests originating from mobile devices. Users are increasingly moving beyond text-based input; over 40% of prompts utilize voice commands, photos, or video uploads. Creativity is a primary driver, with users generating 5 billion images via the Nano Banana model and nearly 1 million songs using Lyria 3 over the past year.
Introducing AI Agents: Gemini Spark
To capitalize on this momentum, Google is rolling out Gemini Spark in local languages for Gemini Advanced (Ultra) subscribers this week. Unlike traditional chatbots, Spark acts as a proactive AI agent designed to manage tasks across Google Workspace tools like Gmail and Docs. It operates in the background, even when devices are locked, signaling a shift from reactive assistance to autonomous task management.
