OpenAI is making a significant push into autonomous technology with the introduction of its next-generation AI agents, dubbed "Dots." While these new tools are debuting as premium offerings, the company has signaled a clear strategy to eventually bring them to billions of users worldwide.

What are Dots and How Do They Function?

Dots are described as "always-on" digital assistants designed to operate autonomously in the background without requiring constant user guidance. According to OpenAI, these agents can understand user priorities and undertake tasks that would otherwise consume significant time and attention.

In practice, Dots can integrate with various tools, including:

  • Email and calendars
  • Workplace platforms
  • Digital services for task execution and organization

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar characterized this shift as a move toward AI that acts proactively as a productivity assistant, rather than simply waiting for a prompt.

The New Pro 500 Tier and Subscription Shifts

Alongside the Dots launch, OpenAI introduced "Pro 500," its most expensive ChatGPT subscription to date. Priced at $500 per month (or $6,000 annually), the plan is tailored for professionals and power users requiring the highest usage limits.

Key features of the Pro 500 include access to "Ultrafast computing" for GPT-6 Astra within ChatGPT Work and Codex, promising a substantial increase in task execution speed. Simultaneously, the company has reinstated the $200 monthly Pro plan, though with lower compute allowances than previously offered, effectively nudging high-demand users toward the new $500 tier.

From Premium to Mass Market

While Dots will initially be restricted to Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, CEO Sam Altman confirmed at DevDay 2026 that the long-term goal is a mass-market version. Sarah Friar noted that the company aims to reach its entire base of over 1.2 billion users, although a specific timeline for this broader release has not yet been announced.
